The role of actuaries in companies has been undergoing a significant transformation in recent years. With the introduction of Solvency II and IFRS 17, there has been a radical increase in the relevance of probabilistic and technical skills in corporate management. At the same time, disruptive insurtech models are gaining traction and challenging the traditional roles of actuaries.

In this context, the speaker aims to share the experience of a qualified actuary who became the CFO of a private equity-backed insurtech startup. Over the past five years, he has successfully guided the company to profitable growth, establishing it as the leading European insurtech and a frontrunner in Italy's direct motor market. He accomplished this by building a fully-fledged finance team from scratch.

During the presentation, we will discuss the gaps currently observed in actuarial training, tools, and culture—such as corporate finance knowledge, business awareness, and pyramid thinking—and explore the opportunities actuaries should seize to become decision-makers or key influencers in board discussions.
